Stick to 2-4 Inches
3 inches is the sweet spot for most beds. Going deeper than 4 inches can suffocate roots and trap too much moisture, inviting disease.
Timing Matters
Apply mulch in mid-to-late spring after the soil has warmed. Fall touch-ups help insulate roots before winter.
Keep it Off the Trunk
Leave a 3-6 inch gap around tree trunks and shrub bases. "Volcano mulching" traps moisture and causes rot.
Bulk Saves Money
For anything over 3 cubic yards, bulk delivery is significantly cheaper than bagged mulch from the store.
